«Ladies and Gentlemen, would you please be upstanding for the French National Anthem!» On Saturday 14th March 2015 the Skiercross 2014/15 drew to a close in Megève. Eyes focused on the French flag, the reality of his World Cup victory finally hit Jean-Fred CHAPUIS.
With racing hearts and tears of joy, his loyal Val Thorens supporters were there to share this special moment with him.
There were tears of joy amongst his Val Thorens’ friends when he won an Olympic gold medal at the Sochi Olympic Games a year ago. And just 12 months later, this local Belleville valley boy has added the Crystal Globe to his collection of victories!
Born in 1989, this budding champion drew on his French-Swiss origins to show what he was capable of. «As a child he was already a leader, someone who wasn’t going to be walked all over. He was sensitive and gifted and enjoyed having a laugh at school» remembers one of his coaches. In 2009, at the age of 20, he decided to make the move from Alpine skiing to Skiercross – which proved to be a very decisive choice!
In just three years, Jean-Fred, as he is known to his friends and family, took home 3 of the most prestigious titles of his discipline! World Champion in 2013, Olympic Champion in 2014…The only title remaining to be won was the Skiercross Crystal Globe, which he achieved after an exceptional 2014/15 season!
Jean-Fred took part in the 11 World Cup stages, from Japan to Sweden, via France, coming in the top 3 places 7 times, including 4 wins (Are, Tegernsee, Tegernsee again and Megève).
This season was a triumphant one; after winning a silver medal at the 2015 World Championships he finished the season on a high, holding the Crystal Globe with pride!
Well done Jean-Fred!
