Saturday 22nd November 2014… Whilst Val Thorens was opening and launching the winter season, some of us set off for Kitzbühel (Austria) with a slightly heavy heart. Sure, there are harder things in life but the opening of Val Thorens is the opening of Val Thorens at the end of the day!

After a fabulous opening day (that we followed in real time): sunshine, excellent snow and good humour, (see the opening in pictures)

Val Thorens received two fantastic awards for the second year in a row at the World Ski Awards 2014 :

- Best French Ski Resort 2014

- Best Ski Resort in the World 2014

The World Travel Awards began more than 20 years ago. Created last year, the Oscars of the Ski world reward the international ski industry: resorts, as well as partners and local service providers such as shops, hotels, chalets, tour operators, travel agents, ski lift companies…

The awards are decided by votes from the general public, tourism experts and businesses. The World Travel Awards saw over 180 resorts from 21 leading winter sports resorts (Russia, USA, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Japan...) compete for the title.

Votes are carried out over 16 weeks, representing over a million votes from 127 different nationalities.

It’s 9.39pm, we’ve been in the room for almost two hours, with more than 200 other guests from around the globe. They are about to announce the best French ski resort… And the winner is… : Val Thorens!!

I’m sure you can imagine the explosion of joy and happiness around the table, some of you even shared it with us live via the social networks!

In the best French Ski Resort category, Val Thorens won ahead of Chamonix Mont-Blanc, Courchevel, La Plagne, Les Arcs, Les Deux Alpes, Megève, Méribel, Serre Chevalier, Tignes and Val d'Isère.

With just enough time to appreciate what had happened, to take a quick look at the evening’s images online and to share the achievements of the other award winners called to the stage….it was already 10.30pm, and time to announce the title of Best Ski Resort in the World…

And the winner is…: Val Thorens!!

No way? Really? How? Wow! Yeehaa!

Around the table there was another mega explosion of happiness, pride and emotion, with laughter and tears of joy. A few Tweets, hugs and sharing of this unique moment, and all of the guests raised their arms to recreate Val Thorens’ «United» sign… the reality started to sink in: «Yahoo», Val Thorens voted best ski resort in the world for the second year running!

We would like to say thank you very much for all of your votes, your trust in us and your encouragement!!!

On an international level, Val Thorens has cemented its position as a world benchmark resort ahead of Vallnord, Andorrea – Perisher, Australia – Niseko United, Japan – Treble Cone, New Zealand – YongPyong, South Korea – Kitzbühel, Austria – Bansko, Bulgaria – Ruka, Finland - Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany – Val Gardena, Italy – Trysil, Norway – Rosa Khutor, Russia - Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, Aramon Cerler, Spain - Åre, Sweden - Laax, Switzerland - Cerro Catedral, Argentina - Lake Louise, Canada – Valle Nevado, Chile and Deer Valley Resort, USA.

«It’s a source of enormous pride that inspires us to go even further! These new awards offer a great sense of achievement for all we’ve acomplished since 1971. More than just satisfaction, they offer a true form of recognition, which makes us all responsable, encouraging us to always go that extra step.

Thank you, let’s share these amazing awards together!

Live United!
